Pick-Up Volleyball
Every week a few of us get together for an extremely competitive game of volleyball. Just kidding, we're pretty much all talk. Join us Wednesdays at 5 pm at the Single Grad Apartment courts. The apartments are located right across from the CSE building and the courts are next to the Canyon Vista Cafeteria. To be put on the volleyball email list go to https://csemail.ucsd.edu/mailman/listinfo/volleyball or contact Natalie (ncastell@cs.ucsd.edu).
Pick-Up Ultimate Frisbee
There is a weekly game of Ultimate Frisbee played at 4 pm on Fridays on Warren Fields (across the street from the Canyonview pool). There is an e-mail list for announcements; to sign up, go to https://csemail.ucsd.edu/mailman/listinfo/ultimate.
Intramural Sports Leagues
If you're looking to participate in sports leagues organized by the UCSD Intramural Department, you may be in for an uphill battle: while CSE grads do play a wide variety of sports, it's the rare sport that draws a lot of CSE grads. But there is hope. In the past few years, the department has fielded teams in Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Softball, and our perennial powerhouse Football team (joint with other Engineering Grads). If you would like to organize an intramural team, feel free to use misc@cs as there are usually a few people who are interested but lacking the time/motivation to put together a team on their own.
UCSD Club Sports
UCSD's Recreation Department also supports a number of non-NCAA Sports Club Teams that compete on behalf of the university. Several of these teams have won Conference and/or National titles. You can find out more about each of these teams on the Sports Clubs Homepage.
Rec Classes
Besides intramurals, many students lately have started taking Recreation classes that are run out of RIMAC. Some that we've overheard people mention include: tennis (lessons), gymnastics, Scottish country dancing, trampoline workout, and a plethora of aerobics and martial arts classes.
Gyms/Recreation Centers
If you find intramurals too structured for your casual lifestyle, don't forget that there are plenty of other opportunities to stay in shape. There are three recreation centers: Canyonview (just east of the CSE building), the Main Gym (near MuirCollege), and the RIMAC (northeast corner of campus). These centers have facilities for racquetball, tennis, swimming, volleyball, basketball, and many others. And don't say you don't have a partner... ask around. It's a good way to meet others in the department. If you need a wider audience, email misc@cs. There is also a wide variety of sporting activities sponsored by the campus recreation center. These include rock climbing excursions to Joshua Tree, kayaking trips (day and overnight), and backpacking trips, among other things. Check it out.
Other Opportunities
If you're interested in local IceHockey, there are three rinks within 30 minutes and one in the UTC_Mall, all with thriving hockey leagues.
Also see the UCSD Recreation website, it has information on intramurals, facilities, classes, and the like.
