In spring of 2007, there was a great debate as to the usage of various mailing lists that are available. The lack of well-defined posting guidelines often led to a bombardment of messages, many of which were ignored. As a result, new mailing lists were created and guidelines were posted as to proper usage of the new (and old lists). Below is a list of the current mailing lists. Please use good judgment when sending e-mail to them. Unless otherwise noted, they are all @cs.ucsd.edu addresses.
There are two flavors of mailing lists: mandatory and opt-out. The mandatory lists are self-explanatory. For the opt-out lists, you are automatically added to the list but you are free to opt-out if you are tired of getting the e-mails.
Mandatory Mailing Lists
csepeople: Goes out to all people in the department including grad students, faculty, and staff. Use this list to announce a SocialHour that you are planning. You are unlikely to ever have any other reason to send e-mail to this list.
csegrads: Goes out to all current grad students (Ph.D. + M.S.) in the department. Usage of this list should be limited to department (including CSE-GSA) and campus sponsored events and announcements.
talks-cse: Goes out to all people in the department. Feel free to use this list to announce public talks and seminars that are of interest to any CSE people.
Opt-out Mailing Lists
jobs: Goes out to all grad students. Used to announce job openings (internships, part-time employment, etc).
gradsocial: Goes out to all grad students. Use this to announce any social events you may be planning, no matter how big or small. This doesn't get used that frequently; hopefully that is due to a lack of advertising and not a lack of social life
freefood: Yes, free food is important enough to get its own mailing list. If you know of any free food opportunities, please send them here. This list goes only to grad students (faculty and staff can pay for their food!)
misc: Goes to all people in the department. Anything that isn't suited for the above lists goes her. Frequent uses include for-sale items (cars, moving-out sales, etc.), housing announcements (availability or requests), and silly links (lolcats, anyone?)
Other Lists
If you like to PlaySports there are several mailing lists for various sports such as volleyball and ultimate.
Many research groups have a private mailing list setup for them. If you would like one, contact CseHelp (csehelp@cs) for more information.
- Unfortunately, you are also part of a whole slew of university-wide mandated mailing lists. You'll get more e-mails about provost hirings, construction updates, and random crap than you will ever care to think about. Just remember: e-mail filters are your friends.
