Life with your Advisor
You're (one of their many) students, researchers, TAs, peons, but also the life's blood of their research. Finding a balance between obsequious grovelling for funding and heated arguments over the right widget algorithm for your doodad is the trick to having a good relationship with him/her.
Here is a collection of bits of advice for dealing with the person who most stronly defines your experience in the graduate program:
- You have a surprising amount of power in the relationship, so don't be intimidated. They were you, at one point.
What to do if you want to leave your current advisor and find a new person to work with?
What to do if your advisor is leaving you to pursue other opportunities?
- Know what is a reasonable amount of "fun time" and "work time."
- Follow _your_ interests. It's your research, and you'll never graduate if you can't get excited about it.
