What to do when your Advisor Leaves
(See LeavingAdvisor if you want to leave your advisor).
O! The horror! My advisor is leaving the department, whatever shall I do!
Relax. This is a remarkably common occurrance and if you made your grad school decision based solely on that one person, you're an idiot.
Your options:
- Stay with your advisor.
- Find a new advisor.
It's that simple.
Staying with your advisor will either involve relocating to wherever he/she is going, or working out some sort of telecommuting. If they are going to another school, you may have the option of becoming a student at the new university, or staying at UCSD.
If you want to find a new advisor, begin doing so as soon as possible.
